Cowboy Church Bass Club

2025 Northern Division Tournament Recap

Hubbard Creek

May 16 – Practice day, Optional devotional training @ 7pm.

May 17 Day-1 (5 fish limit) Daylight to 2pm, Fellowship dinner @ 6pm, Church service after dinner

May 18 – Day-2 (3 fish limit) Daylight to noon

John Yohner and Al Kohutek find 3 big lunkers and take the win.

Day-1 Al and John easily caught a 5-fish limit in the cut between the big islands targeting the shoreline stubble.  After sacking a limit of 5 small fish, they moved to deep-water boat docks and bagged a 5-lb anchor bass on a 6-inch Senko.  That’s about when their outboard started failing.  At 12PM, they decided to limp over to the dam to be close to the ramp in case the outboard totally quit. While fishing the dam, Al boated a 2.50 pounder on a 6-inch Senko that culled out one of the smaller bass. Their total day-1 weight was 11.77-lbs (2.34 pounds behind 1st place).

Day-2. The night before John worked on the fuel lines and replaced the bulb and main line, but it did not solve the issue.  They started the morning by limping over to some deep-water boat docks and right off the bat John boated a nice 2 pounder on a Zara Spook. Al picked up a 15-inch bass, but they struggled to catch another keeper, so they decided to move to the stubble between the islands to pick up their 3rd keeper.  Once they had a 3-fish limit in the box, Al and John moved to a popular deep-water point.  This spot had boats camped out on it the day before, but at this moment, the boats were gone. Al picked up a nice 6.56-pound bass on a twin tail.  Thirty minutes later, John hooked into a 5.50-lb hawg, but it was hung up in some stubble stickups.  They eased over to it and she freed from the stickup and they were able to net the big fish. John caught this one on a thick zoom trick worm.  They had 14.04-lbs in the box by 8:45 AM and relaxed until 10:45 AM.  It was then that they decided to limp back to the ramp going 3-MPH.  They were lucky to have the wind at their backs going across the lake and made it back in plenty of time.

Their total 8 fish combined two day limit weighed 25.81-lbs and was good for $386.00

Doug Powell caught the big bass of the tournament. It weighed 9.18 lbs. and was good for a $105 payout.  This is also so far the big bass of the year. He caught it on day-2 using a shaky head in 4-ft of water.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 12.16-ft low. The water clarity was normal with muddy water up in the creeks.  The water temp was 73. The air temps were 70-87. The winds were 5-15 mph.  We launched at the dam. 2 other clubs were fishing too. Breckenridge Bass Club (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=100092189005898)  and Bass Nation. There was plenty of parking and we set up the weigh-in next to the ramp.  We had clouds during most of the tournament and temperatures were almost perfect.

SCATTER SHOOTING

Many teams reported catching sandbass. Charley caught a 16-lb buffalo…..Darren Coslin had a medical issue during practice and was not able to fish the tournament.  He is going through some heart testing and is still in the hospital as of 5/20. Please keep him in your prayers.……Jon Griffin caught a 7.09-lb bass during practice……… Big thanks to Jon Griffin and Sue Griffin for allowing us to use their home for the Friday evening devo training and Saturday cookout/church service. They had the perfect place for hosting the events. We watched the storms east of us and felt the cool down draft……Thanks to Jim Kropelnicki, for letting us use his gas grill and to everyone else who contributed to the Saturday meal……Doyle, John, Al, Brandon, & Keith bunked at Jon Griffin & Sue Griffin’s house.  Several teams bunked at the Ridge Motel………With 3 clubs competing on the lake at the same time, popular spots were hard to get……..The lake was full of short fish. 14-inch fish were harder to get and it seemed 3 pounders were almost absent.…… We decided to allow practice on the Friday before the Lake Tyler tournament. Charley kicked around allowing practice every Friday before the tournaments to encourage more fellowship. He also thought it would be good to make the combined North & Central division tournament a 3-day event (not this year but next).

HOW TO DO A DEVOTIONAL

Friday evening – Al Kohutek gave a 30-minute presentation on how to do a devotional. We met on Jon Griffin’s back porch overlooking the lake. Below are the quick reference notes:

This “how to” document can be found at http://www.cowboychurchbassclub.org/BassClubDevo.pdf  or from our website, go to “In The News” and look under “other”.

S: Start WIth a Story

T: Take Them to the Truth

E: Offer Encouragement

P: Personal Application and Prayer

K: Keep

I:  It

S: Short

S: Slick

One Topic / One Point

Some topic examples:

Grace (leads to forgiveness),

Faith, Endurance,

Being the light,

Forgiveness,

Trust,

Doing the right thing,

Leadership,

Habits,

Obedience, …….Attitude, Fairness, Honestly, Revenge, Judging, Generosity, Blame, Brokenness, Patience.  There are thousands of topics.

Time: 5-7 minutes 5 is better. Anything over that and it becomes a sermon.

Keep in mind that if it’s August and we are standing in the sun at the boat ramp after a tournament, the last thing the fishermen want to do is listen to a sermon. We can do more harm than good if we make it too long.

Start With A Story

Begin with a story that relates to the audience, illustrates the point of the devotional message, and grabs your readers’ attention or piques their interest. You can use a personal story from your own life or a story from the Bible or from someone else. An important thing to remember is Jesus taught us with stories. We can teach others by doing the same thing.

Know your audience: age, gender, the event you are at tells you a lot.

Here are some examples showing what the story could be built on:

Farmers - crops, tractors, weather, seeds…..

Cowboys - ropers, barrel racers, horses, cows, buckles, judges, points, rules,  branding, hats….

Fishermen - lures, baits, boats, equipment, lakes, tournaments, fishing stories, competition, weather….

Hunters - guns, a game type, weather, equipment, traps, archery, skills, side-by-sides….

Take Them to the Truth

After you have snagged your reader’s attention the next step, and the most important, is to lead them to the truth. Here is where you want to share the verse or passage of Bible scripture that you are building your message on.

Encouragement

After you share truth from God’s word, the next step is to offer encouragement. How can you inspire them towards faith and godliness? How does it speak to different pain points? Consider these things as you offer your encouragement.  Think about what is God’s promise?  There is a book called “Touchpoints for Men” and at the end of each touch point, there is a promise from God.

Here is an example of the touch point called LOVE, and the promise from God is in ROMANS 8:39 | No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Close with a prayer.

Other points:

-            “Touchpoints for Men, God’s Answer for your every need” Contains 230 topics relevant to men. Each topic contains two to three life-related questions, Scripture that answers each question, and helpful notes. God’s promise could be used as your encouragement.

-            “A Look at life from a Deer Stand devotional by Steve Chapman

-            “Catch of the Day” 365 daily devotionals by Jimmy Houston

LAKE SIDE DEVO - Forgiveness

Donna David shared a powerful testimony about how she endured sexual abuse and how a tornado injured her infant son, causing a brain injury.

Turn up the volume. Here is the audio of her testimony:

http://www.cowboychurchbassclub.org/DonnaDavidTestimonyForgiveness.mp4

Deuteronomy 31:6
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Charley David and Jon Griffin lead a discussion with more scriptures relating to Donna’s testimony.  Below is the audio link:

Richland Chambers

April 26, 2025

Doyle Ray sacks them up fishing the rocks in front of the seawalls in 4-7 ft mid-lake.

Fishing solo, Doyle started out in Long Branch and on the 3rd cast nailed a striper.  Some other fishermen saw him catch it and moved next to him and pushed him off that spot, so he let them have it since he was not targeting stripers, and he moved on to other places.  His first bass caught was the biggest at 6.32-pounds and it was caught at 9:30 AM on a blue flake worm. Fishing solo, he said it was challenging working the net and getting the big ones in the boat.  At one of his spots, in front of a house he was fishing, there was a couple out on the lawn watching the action and talking to Ray.  A few moments later Ray set the hook on a double-digit bass.  He was in about 5-ft of water and the bass would not give up.  The bass was moving from the front to the back several times and surfaced many times and just when he thought the fight was over, the bass would make another run.  He was thinking, this is going to be great and those people out on the lawn could probably take his picture of him and this huge fish and life would be great. After what seemed like an eternity, the fish was about ready to be netted and Ray eased down the net and the big bass saw the net and took off one more time, but this time it broke off.  Ray said his line was probably nicked by the trolling motor or the big motor and caused a weak spot.  The line broke about a foot from the hook. Ray asked the people out on the lawn behind the house if they saw that, and they didn’t really know what he was doing running from one end of the boat to the other…he laughed.  After calming down and trying to put the loss behind him, he took a deep breath and moved 5 yards down the seawall and next cast, hooks a 6 pounder.  This time he gets it in the boat.  Ray’s 3 fish sack weighed 16.19 pounds and was good for a $450 payout.  Ray said this tournament reminded him of the March 23, 2013 tournament on Richland when he caught a 16-pound sack but only placed 3rd in that tournament.

Brandon Wooddell catches the big bass of the tournament. It weighed 7.13 lbs. and was good for a $150 payout.  He and Keith McMillan were the first to weigh in a big sack and it was heartbreaking watching his solid lead dwindle down to 4th place.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 0.77 ft. high. The water clarity was muddy in the backs of creeks.  The water temp was in the 70s in some places. There was a full moon. The air temps were 70-79. The winds were 9-13 mph.  We launched at Oak Cove Marina.  There was a shad spawn going on all over the lake.  The Dallas Bass Hookers club also launched out of Oak Cove. I could not find a website, but they do have a fb page https://www.facebook.com/DallasBassHookers/about .  There was plenty of parking, we set up the weigh-in in the shade next to the water’s edge.

SCATTER SHOOTING

Many teams reported catching hybrid stripers and sandbass…..Al Kohutek and John Yohner started out behind the big island.  A major shad spawn was happening, but nothing was biting so they moved to the boat docks over by the water intake. No luck there, so they decided to move to the coves near Fisherman’s Cove Lodge.  They rented a cabin at Fisherman’s Cove Lodge Friday night and the area looked inviting. It was in the backs of these coves that they found a few keeper bass……….Cowboy Church weighed in about 45 minutes before another club that launched there that morning (Dallas Bass Hookers), so the ramp was not as crowded as the launch was……..It was good to see Donna David at the weigh in……..8 teams had father/daughter and father/son combinations……..Chasity Powell took a swim…….Charley David was fishing this tournament with a new lower unit and new axles on his trailer……… Brian Hopkins was back fishing with his old partner Joe Stepp. Joe had been battling cancer and had recovered enough to fish in the tournament….….Charley asked the club what they thought about opening Friday up as a practice day and fellowshipping that evening like we did at the Classic. Al Kohutek will send out a fb survey on it soon……Looking back, this tournament was similar to one at Richland Chambers on 3/23/2013 http://www.cowboychurchbassclub.org/ccpoints13.htm  Many big sacks were caught then too.   Next tournament will be a 3-day event on Hubbard Creek.  More info to come later.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 23.5 ft. low. The water clarity was clear enough to scuba dive.  20-25 ft visibility in some areas. The water temp was 62. There was a full moon. The air temps were Practice Day 57-80, Day-1 61-89, Day-2 70-95. The Winds were: Practice Day 3-13 mph with gusts to 23, Day-1 12-23 mph with gusts to 37, Day-2 15-25 mph with gusts to 37. There were carp everywhere. The shore was mostly rocky with thin hard stickups that would grab your fishing line in the wind.  Small salt cedars were closer to the bank. Most of the fish weighed in were buck bass. Some fry in the back of the coves, very few bedding fish were seen.  Thick moss in some places. Super clear water. We launched at Elm Creek Marina.  Great ramp but they need a light to see backing down the ramp. The beach area was very rocky, so much so that we did our briefing out on the water in the cove. We weighed in under a shaded pavilion with plenty of parking, and we did our church service in their café.

LENGTH LIMITS

Black bass - For largemouth bass there is no minimum length limit, only two largemouth bass less than 18 inches may be retained each day. For smallmouth bass (if present), minimum length limit = 14 inches. No minimum length limit on Alabama, Guadalupe and spotted bass. Daily bag limit for all black bass species is 5 in any combination.

Al Kohutek asked the TP&W fisheries department why the limits were set this way and they said…..…”When O.H. Ivie was first constructed, it opened under an 18-inch minimum length limit (MLL) and 5 fish daily bag from 1990-2001. In the late 90's biologists discovered slow growth and poor condition was a problem for bass under 20 inches. The decision was made to allow for harvest of up to 2 bass below 18 inches to try and increase harvest, thin the overcrowded small bass, and improve growth rates. That's how we settled on the current regulation. It doesn't have anything to do with which bass are the best breeders, but more to do with trying to improve bass growth rates.”

SCATTER SHOOTING

Les Smith rented a big house about 30 minutes away from the launch site. Friday night we had 30 people over for a BBQ fellowship.  Les cooked, Charley provided the Wagyu beef from his ranch, and other teams provided the sides.  Pictures https://photos.app.goo.gl/PjKRhLFspoeyqrDr9  ……Charley David caught a 6-lb bass on practice day on a glide bait. Al and Charley boated 20-25 fish each day on Senkos, but they were all smaller buck bass ……..Pierce Johnston fished solo………….Most teams struggled catching bass over 18 inches……There was lots of wildlife around the lake, deer, turkey, porcupines, skunks, roadrunners, & dove. West Texas is beautiful in the spring.….….. Gary Burnham took a bad fall and had to have emergency surgery on his knee, Toby Turner had to fish the tournament by himself……Gus Chavira pickup transmission went out. Luckly there was a buddy there that could tow his boat home for him…..Kenneth Mahone lost his outboard on Day-2…..Charley David lost his lower unit at the end of day-1 and lost a trailer bearing on the way home day-2.  He limped home on 3 wheels….Doyle Ray had to make a run to San Angelo to get a trolling motor part Friday night…..Teams had to qualify by fishing at least 3 tournaments in 2024 to be eligible to fish in the “Classic”. These teams didn’t have to pay an entry fee because of their standing in 2024: Brandon Wooddell/Keith McMillan***Mike Thurman/Joe Lee***Bryan Barfield/Kyle Barfield***Darren Coslin/Phil Hickle***Charley David/Al Kohutek***Gus Chavira/Gus Ruben Chavira. Each team fishing in the 2024 regular tournaments contributed $10 to the 2025 “Classic”.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 0.25 ft. high. The water clarity was murky.    The air temp was 51-81.   The water temp was 62-66.  Winds 9-21 mph with gusts to 28.

We launched at the Villages Marina.  Fisher’s of Men also launched there with 30+ boats.

SCATTER SHOOTING

It was great to see Reggie and Teri Stewart. Reggie founded the club 19 years ago………. We shared the ramp with Fishers of Men. Here are the results:  https://www.fomntt.com/pageflow.cfm?callpage=results&schid=9791&getyear=2025&divid=47 ……….   Byron McFarland fished solo.  His trolling motor failed early on in the tournament……. Al Kohutek caught 2 of his keepers in the marina and picked up his 3rd one a couple of miles in the next basin up the lake along the same shore as ramp area. He didn’t realize his net had a big hole in it and the fish fell through it but was still able to land the fish……. Daren Coslin and Phil Hickle were late to the weigh-in. They had 1 fish that weighed 2.53 pounds and lost about 13 points due to penalties.  Charley and Al are going to evaluate the “late rule” to see if they can improve the wording.…...……. Mike Thurman had battery issues and still placed 2nd….. Big thanks to Les Smith for checking people in ……. Good news.  Al Kohutek had 10 rod/reels blow out of the boat coming home from Squaw Creek.  He posted in several local facebook groups and after 3 weeks was contacted by a local rancher that he found them. Many people were praying for them to be found. Praise God for the answered prayers.

LAKESIDE DEVO – Al Kohutek gave a short message on COMPETITION.

Al reminded everyone that he is not a great speaker and encouraged the members to bring a messaged or testimony.  If he can do, so can you.

Is competition good?

Many agreed. Yes competition can be good.

1 CORINTHIANS 9-2

Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!

Competition can motivate you to improve yourself and sharpen your skills.  We will circle back to 1 Corinthians 9-2 at the end of the message.

When does competition become a bad thing?

It can be.  Al used the example of the high school relay race recently in the news where one of the runners bashed a competitor on the head with a baton giving the competitor a concussion.  He also gave the example of flopping in football and basketball.   A flop is an intentional fall or stagger by a player, after little or no physical contact by an opponent, to induce an official to call a personal foul on the opponent. The move is sometimes called acting, as in "acting as if he were fouled". Because it is inherently designed to deceive the official, flopping is considered unsportsmanlike

2 TIMOTHY 2:5

Athletes cannot win the prize unless they follow the rules.

Competition is unhealthy when it causes you to sin. If winning becomes everything, you may be tempted to compromise your integrity.

Competition can lead you to compare yourself to others. This can lead to pride, and pride leads to trouble.

MATTHEW 18:1-4

The disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?" Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, ...
"Unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven."

Competition is inappropriate in matters of faith and in the eyes of God any time it causes you to elevate yourself above others.

People say I can be too competitive at times. How can I learn to lighten up?

Al gave some examples on how the club helps fellow competitors during the cash payouts.  Winning teams reveal what they caught their fish on and any other details about how they won.  This helps everyone become a better fisherman.  We also are there to help each other when there are boat issues or breakdowns.

PHILIPPIANS 2:3-4

Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

There's nothing wrong with a competitive nature as long as you are not competing for wrong things or out for wrong motives. Control your competitive nature before it causes you to hurt someone else.

COLOSSIANS 3:23

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.

You should always do your best, rather than besting others.
Doing your best honors the God who created you. If besting others is your only goal, you are selfishly trying to honor yourself.

Getting back to……

1 CORINTHIANS 9-24

Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!

Winning a race requires purpose and discipline. Paul uses this illustration to explain that the Christian life takes hard work, self-denial, and grueling preparation. As Christians, we are running toward our heavenly reward. The essential disciplines of prayer, Bible study, and worship equip us to run with vigor and stamina. Don't merely observe from the grandstand; don't just turn out to jog a couple of laps each morning. Train diligently - your spiritual progress depends upon it.

Promise from God 1 CORINTHIANS 15:57 | Thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Note: This message was inspired by the pocket guide “Touch Points for Men”.

Reggie Stewart closed us with a prayer, and we were dismissed.

LAKE CONDITIONS

The lake level was 0.12 ft. low. The water clarity was clear.    The air temp was 25-51.   The water temp was in the 70s.  Winds 0-10 mph.

We launched at the only ramp on the lake.   It was a very cold 25 degrees as we waited in line to get checked in.  All boaters had to register on-line and the lake entry fee was $30 per boat.  Everything went smoothly at the ramp.  We had a delayed start due to the long line.  After the sun came up and we started catching a few fish, our hands began to warm up. There were 3 or more tournaments on the lake.   Some guys reported that it was hard to get up the hill to the parking lot due to mud mixing with trailer drip.

SCATTER SHOOTING

Joe Crouch missed this tournament so that he could be with his wife Tina. Please keep her in your prayer……Al, John, and Lee headed to a spot where the birds were working bait schools and stayed in that area all day. Lee Davis fished as separate solo team in the same boat as John/Al ……Charley and Les walked the entire line of boats while we were waiting for the gates to open and checked everyone in……..Bass fry were around the timber in the lake……After the weigh-in, the teams headed to Massy’s BBQ https://www.masseysbbq.com/ for the payouts and message.  We had an inside pavilion all to ourselves.  The BBQ was great and there was plenty of room to park our boats in the back parking lot. Big thanks to Todd Massey for having everything setup and ready for us………Al Kohutek had 9 rod & reels and Lee Davis had 1 rod/reel blow out of the boat on the way home….. Debby Kohutek donated 6 dozen eggs from her pasture raised hens …..The next tournament will be on Lake Palestine on March 22.

LAKESIDE DEVO – Charley David gave a short DEVO

We decided to move the message and awards to Massy’s BBQ and had the pavilion to ourselves.

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.”

John 1:1-7 NLT

“Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching.”

2 Timothy 4:2 NLT

“For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.”

2 Timothy 4:3-4 NLT

“Are we saying, then, that God was unfair? Of course not! For God said to Moses, “I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose.” So it is God who decides to show mercy. We can neither choose it nor work for it.”

Romans 9:14-16 NLT

Prayer Requests:

Keep Tina Crouch in your prayers.

Joe Lee closed us with a prayer, and we were dismissed.
